Recent news has made the Chinese public concerned that the country"s ambition to build universities that compete with the finest in the world could take longer to materialize than expect-ed. On May 4, 1998, at the 100th found-ing anniversary of Peking University, then Chinese President Jiang Zemin announced "China will build several world-class univer-sities to meet the demands of the country"s modernization drive."
