Sun Yang, a 19-year-old Chinese swim-mer, resetthe world men’s 1,500-meter reestyle swimmingrecordto 14 minutes, 34.14 seconds onthefinal day ofthe 14th FINA World Swimming Championshipsin Shanghai. The former world record of 14 minutes, 34.56 seconds was set by Australian thlete Grant Hackett in 2001.
Sun setthe new record with a dramatic inal pushinthelast 50 meters. Atfirst, Sun railed world record pace by morethantwo econds before producing a searing finaltwolaps. Sun’s gold medalwas the ffth gold won by China’s swimming team. Sun altogether wonour medals at this championship: two gold, one silver and one bronze.In the Guangzhou Asian Games last year, Sun set an Asian recordof 14 minutes, 35.43 seconds in the men’s 1,500 freestyle.
